Altos de Estiquirin is a dry community in a valley in southern Honduras and does not currently have a water system. The only water that community members have access to is a hand dug well that they must walk to to collect water and carry it back to their homes. Altos de Estiquirin is an isolated community with little to no water available, as much is used for irrigation of nearby crops. The dry season in southern Honduras heavily affects Altos de Estiquirin. This already hot and dry region has less water available during this time of year. This means that families have even less access to water, which can impact health conditions in the community.
Water System Solution
A strong partnership between Global Brigades, community leaders, and Fundación Agrolíbano allowed for the completion of a new water system in Altos de Estiquirín in 2019. Through the community leaders organized community participation and support, Global Brigades constructed a well water system that connected to a new 15,000-gallon storage tank with a chlorinator, trained the water council, and trained a community member to maintenance the system. Community members and Global Brigades celebrated Altos de Estiquirín’s completed water system in December of 2019.
