Project Overview
Global Brigades volunteers and community members worked with the support of World Vision to build a new water system in the community of Cuscateca in 2016. This system provides clean water to over 225 beneficiaries.
Cuscateca, Honduras
When Global Brigades arrived a small portion of the homes in Cuscateca were part of a neighboring community’s water system. However, even these homes only received water every 12 to 15 days. The rest of the community relied on water from a creek that runs through the community. The women washed clothes in the river and carried water to and from the creek on a daily basis for cooking, cleaning, and drinking in the house. However, because it was untreated the water was increasing the risk of gastrointestinal infections, diarrhea, and parasites. There were also many other poor hygienic and sanitary conditions in Cuscateca such as a lack of latrines, water storage units, and showers.
Water System Solution
Global Brigades partnered with the Water Council of Cuscateca and World Vision to complete a water project for the 185 residents of the community. World Vision drilled a well to access a consistent source of sufficient water, and in collaboration with Global Brigades and the municipal government an electric pump was installed to pump enough water for the entire community. GB volunteers, with the help of the entire community, constructed the water storage tank, pumping line, and distribution network to bring a consistent water supply to all 48 homes and the local church. A Water Council and Basic Sanitation Committee were trained by GB in Cuscateca.
