Project Overview
In June 2016, GB completed the design of the El Saucito water system. Construction began in May 2018, and by September 2018 the system was complete. This well system provides clean water to the 71 households in El Saucito.
El Saucito, Honduras
El Saucito, located in the south of Honduras, over the years has had many problems with the amount of water they had access to. Located in the community there was a small creek where most people would collect water. However, during the dry season, this creek would easily dry up leaving many families with no access to water. This meant that the people of the community would have to either walk, bike or take a truck to the nearest community to get water. This would either take hours to walk there, or cost a lot of money on gas. Once they got to this community, the water was not free. They would then have to spend money on barrels, jugs and bags of water. One barrel cost around 40 lempiras, each family needs at least 2 barrels per day and on top of that they would need to spend money on gas to transport this water back to their community. In the community there was three public wells and three private wells. The public wells would quickly dry up in the dry season as there simply was not enough water for everyone in the community. There was no established water council in the community when GB first made the partnership with El Saucito.
Water System Solution
With the help from a congressman from the department of Valle and the Munipality of Nacome Global Brigades began to design the water system in El Saucito in 2016 with the University of Manchester and University of California Irvine Engineering Brigades. They decided that it would be best to go for a pumping system because this would mean lower spending in the dry season. The most expensive part of the project was the drilling for the well and the pump itself. The lengh of the project was around 5,856 meters of pipe. A tank of 15,000 gallons was built in the community. The gallons of water per minute from the new well was 25, which was sufficient for the amount of houses in the community, and the size of the pump was 5 horse power. This system was completed in September 2018, and 71 households now have consistent access to clean water. Lastly, with the help of Global Brigades, a local water council was established, trained, and legalized as a recognized institution.
