Project Overview

Jorge Alvarez community is located in Nacaome, Valle which is in the south of Honduras. People in the community frequently suffer from the flu, asthma, and diarrheal disease, most of which result from a lack of adequate hygiene and sanitation infrastructure. Many of these health issues arise from a lack of proper water and hygiene infrastructure, sanitation practices, healthcare, and education resources.

Jorge Alvarez, Honduras

The Jorge Alvarez community lacked a formal water system at the time of Global Brigades’ initial visit. The community relied solely on a public hand well, which was insufficient to meet the water needs of all residents. Acknowledging the potential health risks of this limited access, community members demonstrated a strong commitment to improving their water supply, establishing a meaningful and productive partnership between the community and Global Brigades.

Water System Solution

In 2024, Global Brigades constructed a pump system in the Jorge Alvarez community with the support of several chapters and active participation from community members. The project included the installation of 3.00 kilometers of piping, benefiting a total of 445 community members.

Global Brigades conducted trainings with the existing Water Council in the community. The Council is responsible for monitoring and maintaining the wells and pump. Additionally, Global Brigades trained a Basic Sanitation Committee, which work to share information with community members on the importance of clean water and proper sanitation and hygiene practices. Together, the Water Council and the Basic Sanitation Committee oversee all aspects of the construction of the water system in the community. They ensure that the system is used and maintained responsibly.
