Project Overview

In 2019, Global Brigades and its partner, the Ghana Water Company, installed 2 new standpipes in Suprudo providing clean water to over 1,701 people.

Suprudo, Ghana

Community members in Suprudo, located in the Ekumfi District, rely primarily on farming, arts and crafts, and trading to make a living. One of the major challenges for the development of their community was the lack of access to clean, sufficient, drinking water. The community of Suprudo had a few water systems that fed the community before the construction of the new standpipes. Community members had been using a rainwater harvester for 5 years and a few standpipes that were 12 years old and needed fixing. Also, the few houses that have water connections have to pay a monthly fee of $10.

Water System Solution

The Ghana Water Company is in charge of water distribution and treatment in the region where Suprudo is located. In 2019, Global Brigades worked with the GWC to modify and expand its distribution infrastructure to get treated water to strategic points within Suprudo where 2 standpipes were built. These standpipes give the 1,701 community members living in Suprudo, access to clean potable water, and meet the standards of the World Health Organization. By placing them in areas near the population, families spend less time and energy retrieving water for use in their homes.
